Following on from Part 1, I had some more experiments with long exposure with some light trails near to home and then more waterfall efforts whilst on holiday in Devon continuing to use the Fujifilm X-E2. First up was close to home when a fun fair came to town in March. Myself and a fellow photography minded friend, Tom Briggs, decided to go along and have a go capturing the rides with some long exposures. We took a while trying to find a good spot – unfortunately there was no good spot for multiple rides at once – and set the tripods up ready. We ended up trying two spots before we finished. There were two in particular I was happy with from the evenings work. This I thought was probably the better one from the point of view of capturing the rides in motion:

However, it was this one that I thought was the best of the night having Peterborough Cathedral in shot as well:

The next occasion was whilst on holiday in Devon. One day we went to Watersmeet, walking from Lynmouth along the river. This gave several sections of waterfall but the majority of the walk was too bright – I do not have any ND filters to use so was relying entirely on the camera. However this did give me opportunities from time to time, including some where I got both a fast shutter release and a slightly longer one (though by no means long) as I though it would be interesting to see the difference time makes. The top one of these images was taken with 1/500 sec shutter, the lower with 1/4 sec shutter. The only editing aside from the signature to either of these was the crop and resize.

Quite a major difference really for only 1/4 of a second difference in exposure – the reason the longer exposure wasn’t massively over-exposed was a difference in f-number and ISO. Here are a few more from the walk, EXIF data can be found in the caption for each photograph:

The last night we were on holiday I also took some long exposure shots from the window of the cottage we were staying in. It was in Appledore looking out over Richmond Dry Dock and across the bay to Instow. Here are my two favourite shots.

This first one you can see the brake lights of a van and a car that went round the corner on the left, and on the far side in Instow you can see the lights of a bus driving along.

This next one I went for a much brighter exposure to test out the cameras capabilities – and I was very impressed with the quality of what came out.

f/4, 17 sec exposure, ISO1250, +2 step on aperture priority

This brings to an end Experiments With Long(ish) Exposure – Part 2, there are a few more to come in part 3 with more light trails and night lit buildings.

I hope you enjoyed, as always any comments and CC welcome.
